Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is a branch of science that specialises in diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases using laboratory tests. Clinical tests are done using body matter, fluids, tissue and blood to diagnose and prevent diseases. The process involves microorganism screening, chemical analysis and cell count, using laboratory equipment. It is one of the most integral parts of the healthcare system as it plays the role of diagnosis and collection of information required to determine treatment options for the patient. It is impossible to chart a course of medication without the support of MLT.
Candidates with this degree are equipped to manage new advancement in technology, management of laboratories and follow standard protocols of laboratory investigations. Areas in which candidates could specialise are as follows;
- Microbiology
- Haematology
- Blood banking
- Immunology
- Clinical chemistry
- Molecular biology
- Cytotechnology
Duration of the course
The BMLT course is three- year, full-time course which comprises of 6 semesters. A compulsory internship of 6 months is required in the last semester of the course. The whole program comprises of a variety of curricular, extracurricular, co-curricular and social awareness activities.
During this program, students will undertake 5 Basic Courses and 21 Specialized Courses, one short term Dissertation/ Pathology lab/Industry internship Project for 3 months in the 6th Semester. There will be many short-term projects & training programs covering the duration of this program.
Eligibility criteria of the course
- To be Elegible the candidate should be 17 years of age at the time of admission
- He/she should have a passed 10+2 with science subjects or equivalent examination from recognised university or board
- He/she must have scored minimum 55% aggregate score
Admission process
- Apply online on the institute’s website. Application fee for the entry forms are non- refundable
- Shortlisted candidates based on their scores in 10+2 will be called for a personal interview round
- Final selection is based on the 10+2 scores and performance in the personal interview
Career opportunities in MLT
Graduates in medical lab technology are offered a job such as
- Laboratory Technicians
- Medical Officer
- Laboratory Manager
- Medical Record Technician
- Research Associate
- Resident Medical Officer
- Laboratory Testing Manager
- Lab Assistant, Associate Professor or Lecturer
A post-graduate degree might be required to pursue some of these options. MLT course is the backbone of the healthcare industry and hence there is also a growing need for qualified Lab technologists.
