Different moulding processes
Injection moulding
In this process, the material is added to a heated barrel, mixed and forced into a mould cavity. It is allowed to cool where it hardens into the configuration of the cavity. It is used to make products like shims, spacers, insulation accessories, custom moulded products and more.
Extrusion moulding
In this process, the thermoplastic granules are melted and forced through a die where they form the shape. It takes the form of a tube and the shape of the die decides the shape of the tube. Blow moulding
In this process, the plastic is melted and formed into a parison. The parison is a tube through which compresses air is passed. The parison is clamped into the mould and compressed air is passed. Compression moulding
In this process, the material is first preheated and placed in an open heated mould cavity. The mould is then closed with force and pressure is applied to force the material to take the shape of the mould. This is one of the cheapest moulding methods.
Transfer moulding
The plastic is heated in a pot and passed through a channel into the mould cavities. The plastic material is measured before it is added. The mould remains closed and is opened to release the product.
Rotational moulding
In this process, the plastic is heated and added to a hollow heated mould. The mould is then rotated causing the plastic to stick to the walls of the mould. To get an even thickness the mould is rotated all the time during the heating phase.
Structural foam moulding
This process is used when the plastic parts require thicker walls than that produced using injection moulding. A chemical blow agent is used to make the walls thicker. Foaming happens when the melted plastic enters the mould cavity.
Thermoforming
In this process, the plastic sheets are heated horizontally and pulled down into the hollow one-piece mould cavity. When it cools it takes the shape of the mould.
